What is the best way to reach Hamburg Airport?
Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt (HAM) sits in Hamburg-Fuhlsbuettel, about 8.5 kilometres north of the city centre. You have several ways to get there: the S1 S-Bahn, various bus lines or a private door-to-door transfer at a fixed price. Which option suits you depends on your luggage, departure time, group size and your starting point in Hamburg or the surrounding region. Let us walk through all three calmly.
The S1 S-Bahn: fast, but with changes
The S1 connects HAM directly with Hamburg Central Station and the city centre. From the main station to the Hamburg Airport stop takes around 25 minutes. The big advantage is that the train runs frequently and never gets stuck in traffic. It helps to know, though, that the train splits at Ohlsdorf. Only the front section continues to the airport, while the rear heads towards Poppenbuettel. Sit in the wrong carriage and you will have to change at Ohlsdorf.
For travellers with light luggage who live centrally along the S1 line, the S-Bahn is a good and affordable choice. But if you come from a district without a direct connection, you add a walk, a change and waiting time. With a large suitcase, a pram or an early-morning start, the trip to the station quickly becomes a hassle.
Buses and other public transport
Several bus lines serve the area around HAM, linking neighbouring districts such as Niendorf, Langenhorn and Norderstedt. Combined with the S1 or the U-Bahn, you can reach almost any point in the city. The drawback stays the same: you depend on timetables, have to change and carry your own luggage. If the network runs late or a rail strike hits, tight pre-flight timing can fall apart fast.
The private fixed-price transfer
A private airport transfer picks you up right at your front door, hotel or office and takes you to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 without a single change. The price is set at the moment you book, with no taximeter, and starts from 98 euros for the whole vehicle. Especially when you travel as a couple, a trio or a family, the fixed price per person quickly becomes attractive.
Booking is handled through our partner Kiwitaxi, while the ride itself is carried out by local, licensed operators. You can choose anything from an economy car to a minibus for up to 19 people, child seats are available and pets are welcome in a carrier. The available payment methods and the binding terms are shown during the booking process.
Relaxed pickup and return flight
On the way back, your driver waits with a name sign in the arrivals hall. The handy part: 90 minutes of waiting time at the airport are included. Simply add your flight number when booking, and any delay is factored in automatically so nobody waits at the terminal in vain.
Which option fits you?
If you travel alone, live right by the S1 and carry only a backpack, the S-Bahn is fast and cheap. But as soon as heavy luggage, an early flight, several companions or a poorly connected district come into play, the private transfer shows its strengths: no changes, a fixed pickup time and reliable planning all the way to the terminal. That way you start your holiday or business trip relaxed, instead of wrestling suitcases through the S-Bahn.
