About New Year's Eve in Hamburg
New Year's Eve in Hamburg centres on the harbour, where ships sound their horns at midnight and fireworks light up both banks of the Elbe. In recent years a no-fireworks zone has applied around the Inner Alster and the Rathausmarkt.
Where Hamburg sees in the new year
The harbour is the classic place. At midnight the ships at the Landungsbrücken sound their horns, while private fireworks go up on both banks of the Elbe. Popular viewpoints include:
- Stintfang and Bei der Erholung – above and next to the Landungsbrücken, with a direct view of the river.
- Park Fiction and the Fischmarkt – in St. Pauli and Altona, close to the water and a little calmer.
- Altonaer Balkon and the Dockland roof – high up, with a wide view, but busy early.
- Marco-Polo-Terrassen – in HafenCity, quieter, with a partial view of the port.
Concerts in the Elbphilharmonie and boat parties on the Elbe are other ways to spend the evening; book them early, as they sell out.
Fireworks rules in the city centre
In recent years Hamburg has banned private fireworks around the Inner Alster, including the Jungfernstieg and the Rathausmarkt, with police checks at the edges of the zone. The exact area is set anew each year, so check the current rules before you plan a midnight walk in the centre. Hotels on the Alster are still reachable, but the streets around them are busy late in the evening.
Arriving on 31 December
Many guests fly in on the afternoon of New Year's Eve. The ride from Fuhlsbüttel to the centre or the harbour usually takes 25 to 40 minutes, but from early evening the streets towards St. Pauli and the Landungsbrücken fill with people on foot. Land before late afternoon if you can, check in, and walk to your viewpoint from the hotel. Our page on hotels in St. Pauli and Altona shows which ones are within walking distance of the river.
Getting home after midnight
Right after midnight the riverside streets are packed and some are closed. A pick-up directly at the Landungsbrücken is rarely possible. Walk ten to fifteen minutes up to a quieter street, for example towards the Michel or the Holstenstraße, and meet your driver there. Book the ride in advance and give a realistic time, as the first hour of the new year is the hardest to plan.
Harbour or Alster: choosing your base
A hotel near the river lets you walk to the fireworks and back without any transport, but the streets outside stay loud until the early hours. A hotel on the Alster or in the quieter districts is calmer, yet you will need a pick-up or a long walk after midnight. Families with small children often pick the second option and watch the fireworks from a window or a nearby park.
Flights on 1 January
Early flights on New Year's Day are popular for the trip home. Book your transfer from the hotel to the airport a few days ahead and add your flight number. Roads are usually empty in the morning, so 25 to 40 minutes is a realistic estimate. If your flight leaves before dawn, our late-night transfer page explains how night pick-ups work.

Checklist for the turn of the year
- Flight number for the arrival, so a delay on a busy travel day is covered.
- Hotel address as the destination, not a viewpoint.
- Pick-up point for the return on a side street away from the river.
- Number of guests and bags; for groups of up to 7, a minivan keeps everyone together.
