About HAM to Lübeck & Travemünde

Lübeck, the old Hanseatic city on the Trave, is known for the Holstentor, its brick churches and its old town island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travemünde, part of Lübeck, is a seaside resort and one of Germany's main ferry ports for Scandinavia and the Baltic states.

Getting from Fuhlsbüttel onto the A1

The airport is in Hamburg's north, the A1 to Lübeck starts in the east, and there is no motorway in between. Your driver crosses the city's north-east on the ring roads towards Wandsbek or cuts through the Walddörfer to the junction at Ahrensburg. That first part takes 20 to 30 minutes and is the most variable bit of the trip. Once on the A1, it is a straight run past Bargteheide and Bad Oldesloe to the Lübeck exits.

Lübeck's old town is about 70 to 80 km from HAM, usually 50 to 70 minutes. Travemünde adds another 15 to 20 minutes on the A226.

Hamburg Airport to Lübeck: where the car stops on the island

The old town sits on an island ringed by the Trave and the canal, with the Holstentor on its western side and the Hauptbahnhof just beyond. Much of the island has narrow one-way streets and areas where cars should not linger. Give the exact hotel or flat address and your driver will use the nearest legal stopping point. Hotels on the Holstentorplatz side and near the Musik- und Kongresshalle on the Willy-Brandt-Allee are the easiest to reach; places deep in the courtyards and alleys around the Aegidien quarter may mean a short walk with your bags.

If you are heading to the university campus or the hospital in the south of the city, mention it: those are reached from the A1 or A20 without crossing the centre.

Hamburg Airport to Travemünde: ferries, cruises and the beach

  • Skandinavienkai – the ferry port north of Lübeck on the Trave, used by Finnlines (Helsinki, Malmö), TT-Line (Trelleborg) and Stena Line (Liepāja). Tell your driver the shipping line, as check-in lanes differ.
  • Ostpreußenkai – in Travemünde itself, where cruise ships moor near the mouth of the Trave.
  • Beach front and hotels – along the promenade and the Vorderreihe; in summer the stopping space is short, so a quick drop is best.
  • Priwall – across the river, reached by the small Priwall ferry or by the long road round via Mecklenburg.

For a ferry departure, check the latest check-in time with your shipping line and add it to your planning, not the sailing time.

Hamburg Airport to Lübeck Airport

Lübeck Airport lies in Blankensee on the southern edge of the city, close to the A20. It has a small timetable, mostly holiday flights; check your booking for the current schedule. A transfer between HAM and Lübeck makes sense when you land in Hamburg and fly on from Lübeck, or the other way round. The drive takes about 50 to 60 minutes. Enter both flight numbers in the comments and leave a generous buffer, because a small airport closes its check-in sharply on time.

When it gets tight on this route

The A1 between Hamburg and Lübeck is one of the busiest summer routes in the north. Saturdays in July and August, when holiday flats change over, and Friday afternoons are the slow times. Add 30 minutes on those days. During the Travemünder Woche sailing regatta, usually in late July, Travemünde itself is busy and some roads near the beach are closed. In winter the Christmas markets in Lübeck's old town draw crowds in the evenings.

How long does the ride from Hamburg Airport to Lübeck take?

Usually 50 to 70 minutes to the old town, depending on traffic between the airport and the A1.

Can my driver take me to the ferry at the Skandinavienkai?

Yes. Name your shipping line in the booking so the driver uses the right check-in lane, and plan for the latest check-in time, not the departure.

Is there a transfer from HAM to Lübeck Airport?

Yes, the drive to Lübeck Airport in Blankensee takes about 50 to 60 minutes. Check your flight's current schedule, as the airport has only a small timetable.

A personal greeting with a name sign can depend on the booked service and meeting point. Follow your specific instructions rather than assuming one terminal exit.
