About Hotels at Central Station & St. Georg

Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is one of Germany's busiest stations. To the east lies St. Georg with Steindamm and Lange Reihe, to the south the office district of Hammerbrook, and to the west the shopping street Mönckebergstraße.

East of the tracks: St. Georg and Kirchenallee

St. Georg starts right at the station's eastern exit. Most hotels here are on lively streets where stopping is brief:

  • Reichshof Hamburg – Kirchenallee, opposite the station; the car stops in front of the historic facade.
  • Hotel Europäischer Hof Hamburg – Kirchenallee, a few doors along; same kerb, ask the driver to stop near the entrance.
  • ibis Hamburg Alster Centrum – Holzdamm, between the station and the Alster; a quieter street with room for a short stop.
  • The George Hotel Hamburg – Barcastraße, in the north of St. Georg near the Alster; residential side street, easy drop-off.
  • Motel One Hamburg-Alster – Steindamm; a busy shopping street with delivery vans in the second row, so the stop is quick.
  • ARCOTEL Rubin Hamburg – Steindamm as well, further east; same conditions, be ready to step out.
  • Hotel City House – Pulverteich, a small side street in St. Georg; quiet for unloading.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Hamburg City – Adenauerallee, between the station and Berliner Tor; multi-lane road, the driver uses the kerb in front of the hotel.
  • Novotel Hamburg City Alster – Lübecker Straße, on the edge of Hohenfelde; arterial road, stop at the hotel front.

West of the station: Mönckebergstraße side

  • IntercityHotel Hamburg Hauptbahnhof – Glockengießerwall, on the Kunsthalle side of the station; the stop is on Glockengießerwall, a short walk from the platforms.
  • Novotel Hamburg Central Station – Steinstraße, by the Steinstraße U-Bahn station and the end of Mönckebergstraße; kerbside stop in front of the entrance.
  • HENRI Hotel Hamburg Downtown – Bugenhagenstraße in the Altstadt, a few steps from Mönckebergstraße; narrow street, so the stop is short.

The art museum is right next door; see our page on the Kunsthalle if you plan a visit on arrival day.

South of the tracks: Hammerbrook and Berliner Tor

Behind the Deichtorhallen the office district of Hammerbrook begins. The streets are wide and straight, which makes drop-offs easy outside rush hour:

  • ibis Hamburg City and ibis budget Hamburg City – Amsinckstraße, close to the Deichtorhallen; stop in the side access in front of the buildings.
  • HYPERION Hotel Hamburg – Amsinckstraße; forecourt in front of the hotel.
  • Mercure Hotel Hamburg City – Amsinckstraße, further south-east; stop at the hotel entrance.
  • Prize by Radisson Hamburg City – Recha-Lübke-Damm in Hammerbrook, a quieter street off the main roads; the hotel has its own car park nearby.
  • INNSiDE by Meliá Hamburg Hafen – Recha-Lübke-Damm in Hammerbrook, next door to the Prize; despite the name it is not on the harbour, so give the street when you book.
  • Superbude Hamburg St. Georg – Spaldingstraße near Berliner Tor; if you reach the petrol station, the driver has gone too far.
  • Holiday Inn Hamburg Berliner Tor – Wikingerweg, just east of Berliner Tor; quiet access road.

Further east: Horn and beyond

  • PLAZA INN Hamburg Horner Rennbahn (formerly NH Hamburg Horner Rennbahn) – Rennbahnstraße in Horn, next to the racecourse; generous space in front of the hotel.
  • Best Western Plus Hotel Böttcherhof – Wöhlerstraße in the east of the city; stop directly at the entrance.

Both are reached from the airport via the Ring 2 towards Wandsbek and then south, typically in 25 to 40 minutes. In race week at Horn, usually in early summer, the streets around the racecourse fill up. Our Wandsbek page covers that part of town.

Route and pinch points around the station

From the terminal to the Hauptbahnhof is about 9 to 11 km, normally 25 to 35 minutes. The usual line runs through Barmbek and Uhlenhorst towards Lübecker Straße and into St. Georg. The S1 also runs direct from the airport to the station in roughly 25 minutes; our page on the train into Hamburg compares both options.

The tight spots are the junctions at Steintorplatz, the bus station side of Adenauerallee and the Deichtorplatz, where traffic from the Ost-West-Straße meets the roads heading south. On weekday evenings the Amsinckstraße towards the Elbbrücken backs up as well. For the Hammerbrook hotels your driver often avoids the station altogether. More on the station itself is on our Central Station page.

Hotels at Central Station & St. Georg as a transfer destination

Luggage and the trip back to HAM

Few hotels around the station have doormen, and the streets in St. Georg are busy, so pack what you need in a bag you can carry. Your driver unloads the cases at the kerb. A minivan is worth it for groups of four or more with large suitcases.

For the return, allow 25 to 40 minutes from St. Georg or Hammerbrook, more in the afternoon rush. Book with the hotel as pickup address. Early-morning flights are easy from here: before 6 am the roads are almost empty. Your driver drops you in front of your terminal; meeting points for arrivals are explained on the HAM meeting point page.

Route from Hamburg Airport

Before you book

Service details are confirmed with your individual offer.

Off-peak the times are similar. The private transfer takes you to the hotel door with your luggage, which helps with heavy cases or children.

Which hotels are south of the station?

The ibis, ibis budget, HYPERION and Mercure hotels on Amsinckstraße, Prize by Radisson and INNSiDE on Recha-Lübke-Damm, Superbude St. Georg and the Holiday Inn Berliner Tor.

Is the price per person?

No. You see the total price for the whole vehicle before you book.

Can I be collected from a hotel, apartment or station?

Enter the exact pickup address or station and check the confirmed meeting point. Train and bus station pickups include 30 minutes of complimentary waiting and other locations include 20 minutes, counted from the selected pickup time.
