About HAM to Rostock & Warnemünde
Rostock is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a Hanseatic port with a university founded in the 15th century. Its seaside district Warnemünde, with lighthouse, beach and Passagierkai, is one of Germany's busiest cruise ports.
The route east: Lübeck, Wismar, Rostock
The distance is roughly 180 to 210 kilometres, depending on whether you are going to Rostock's old town or out to Warnemünde. From Fuhlsbüttel your driver takes the A1 north-east towards Lübeck and then the A20 along the Baltic coast past Wismar. Near Rostock the route leaves the A20 and follows the city motorway north to Warnemünde. Coming from the west, you normally do not need the toll tunnel under the Warnow.
Expect around two hours to Rostock and two and a half hours to Warnemünde. The A20 is usually free-flowing; the slow parts are the A1 between Hamburg and Lübeck and, in summer, the last kilometres into Warnemünde.
Warnemünde Cruise Center: berths on the Passagierkai
Cruise ships in Warnemünde berth along the Passagierkai at the mouth of the Warnow, next to the old lighthouse and the beach. The main terminal buildings serve berths P7 and P8, while other ships use berths further along the quay. Warnemünde railway station is a few minutes' walk from the ships. Lines such as AIDA, TUI Cruises with Mein Schiff, MSC and Phoenix Reisen start or call here; which berth your ship gets is shown in your documents.
- Drop-off – parking right at the cruise center is not possible during calls, so being dropped off is the easiest way in. Your driver follows the port's signage to the stopping area.
- Luggage – cases are handed in at the terminal with the cruise line's tags. The terminal has no lockers; those are at the station.
- Accessibility – the main cruise centers are at ground level; tell your cruise line in advance if you need help at check-in.
When it gets tight: Hanse Sail and summer Saturdays
Every August, Hanse Sail brings tall ships and huge crowds to Rostock and Warnemünde, and in July the Warnemünder Woche adds sailing races and a busy promenade. On those weekends, access roads to the waterfront are partly closed. Add the usual Saturday traffic of holiday homes changing guests along the coast, and the last stretch can take as long as the whole A20. Tell your driver your check-in slot so the pick-up at HAM can be planned with a buffer.
Other addresses in Rostock
Not every guest is heading for a ship. Your driver takes you just as easily to a hotel in the old town, the city harbour, the university or the ferry terminals in the Überseehafen for crossings to Denmark and Sweden. For the ferry port, enter the shipping line and terminal from your ticket, as the overseas harbour is large and spread out on the eastern bank of the Warnow.
Practical points for the booking
Enter your flight number and the full destination, ideally the terminal name or the hotel. For a family with beach and cruise luggage, a minivan is the safer choice. The total price is visible before you book and applies to the whole vehicle. Your driver meets you at the place given in your confirmation; how that works at Terminal 1 and 2 is explained on the page about the HAM meeting point.

From Warnemünde back to Hamburg Airport
On disembarkation day, plan backwards from your flight: two and a half hours of driving, a buffer for the A1 around Lübeck and Hamburg, plus check-in time at HAM. A departure before early afternoon is rarely realistic. Book the ride from the cruise center to the airport, add the ship's name and a mobile number, and you will be called if your driver is waiting at a different stopping point. Further long-distance routes are listed under long-distance transfers from HAM, and cruises from Hamburg itself in the cruise terminal guide.
