About HAM to Airbus Finkenwerder
Finkenwerder is a former Elbe island on the south bank of the river, once a fishing village and today home to one of the largest Airbus sites in Europe with its own runway. Next to the factory lies the ZAL research centre, while the old village centre, the fishing harbour and the ferry pier keep their maritime feel.
Two airfields, one river between them
Hamburg has two runways that business travellers mix up: the passenger airport in Fuhlsbüttel and the Airbus works runway in Finkenwerder. They are about 25 to 30 km apart by road. Your driver usually takes the A7 through the Elbe tunnel, leaves at Waltershof and follows Finkenwerder Straße west along the port to the island. Outside peak hours, plan 35 to 50 minutes.
Lufthansa Technik, by the way, is located at the airport in Fuhlsbüttel, not in Finkenwerder. If your meeting is there, you only need a short ride across the airport grounds.
Which gate, which building?
- Airbus main entrance on Kreetslag – visitor registration and badge collection; bring a passport or ID card.
- Visitor centre in front of the plant – starting point for factory tours, with views of the runway.
- ZAL on Hein-Saß-Weg – the Centre of Applied Aeronautical Research with several research and industry tenants.
- Suppliers and service providers – several have their own buildings nearby; enter the exact street address, not just "Airbus".
The site is large and gates are not interchangeable. Copy the address from your invitation into the booking form, including any gate number.
Shift changes and tunnel closures
Finkenwerder Straße is the main road in and out of the island. Around shift changes, traffic near the gates gets heavy. The bigger unknown is the Elbe tunnel: rush hour, lane closures or a closed tube at weekends can add 20 minutes or more. For a fixed appointment, book your transfer with at least 30 minutes of slack.
Project teams and repeat trips
Teams that fly in for a week of workshops often travel together. A minivan takes up to seven people, and a minibus up to twelve, with room for laptop bags and samples. Each colleague can be collected at the meeting point named in the confirmation; the meeting point page explains where that is. More on fixed-time rides is on the page about business transfers.
Before you land: what your driver needs
- The exact address and gate from your invitation, or the ZAL address if your meeting is there.
- Your flight number, so the pickup follows the real landing time rather than the timetable.
- A mobile number that works in Germany, in case the driver needs to reach you at the meeting point.
- The number of colleagues and cases, especially if you carry demo kits, drawing tubes or tool cases.
If your host has told you to report to a specific reception at a fixed time, add that to the booking notes. Your driver then plans the route through the tunnel with this time in mind and drops you right where the visitor process starts.

After work: ferry, harbour, hotel
Many project guests stay on the north bank. The HADAG ferry line 62 connects the Finkenwerder pier with the Landungsbrücken and is a pleasant way back in the evening. For accommodation close to the ferry and the port, take a look at the hotels in St. Pauli and Altona. Those who stay in Finkenwerder can explore the fishing harbour and the dike paths along the Elbe.
