About HAM to Schwerin & Wismar
Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is known for its fairy-tale castle on an island and the lakes around the city. Wismar is a Hanseatic port on the Baltic whose old town forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Stralsund.
Which motorway: A24 or A1 and A20?
For Schwerin, your driver usually takes the A24 towards Berlin, which starts at the Horner Kreisel in Hamburg's east, and turns north onto the A14 at the Schwerin interchange. For Wismar, the faster line is often the A1 to Lübeck and then the A20 east along the Baltic. Both begin with the same task: getting from Fuhlsbüttel across the north-eastern districts to the motorway, which takes 20 to 35 minutes depending on the time of day.
Schwerin is about 115 to 130 km from HAM, usually 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. Wismar is about 120 to 135 km, usually 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes.
Hamburg Airport to Schwerin: castle, lakes and old town
Schwerin's landmark is the castle on its island between the Schweriner See and the Burgsee, also seat of the state parliament. Right next to it, the Alter Garten square with the state theatre and the museum is often closed to traffic for events. The old town lies a little further north, around the Markt and the cathedral, and the Pfaffenteich lake separates it from the Hauptbahnhof quarter. Hotels on the Pfaffenteich and near the station are easy to reach by car; in the narrow lanes of the Schelfstadt your driver may need to stop at the corner.
If you are staying by the lake, for example in Zippendorf or on the eastern shore, give the full address: those are outside the centre and approached on different roads.
Hamburg Airport to Wismar: harbour and market square
Wismar's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Stralsund. Its Markt is one of the largest market squares in northern Germany, surrounded by gabled brick houses and the Wasserkunst fountain house. The Alter Hafen, the old harbour with its fish stalls and traditional ships, lies a few streets to the north-west. Hotels around the Markt and the harbour are reached from the ring of streets around the old town; the square itself is not a place to stop.
From Wismar many guests continue to the island of Poel, connected by a causeway, or along the coast towards the Mecklenburg resorts. Add the final address if that is your plan.
Both towns in one ride
Schwerin and Wismar are only about 35 km apart, linked by the A14. If you have business in one and a hotel in the other, book the ride to your first stop and arrange the second leg separately, or add both addresses to the comments and check what the booking form offers. Between the two, allow 30 to 40 minutes.
When it gets tight on the way east
The start of the A24 at the Horner Kreisel is a classic Hamburg bottleneck in the morning and late afternoon. On the A1 towards Lübeck, summer Saturdays bring holiday traffic. In Schwerin, open-air performances of the Schlossfestspiele in front of the castle usually take place in summer and close the Alter Garten; in Wismar the Swedish Festival, usually held in August, fills the old town and the harbour. On such days give your driver the exact address and allow extra time.

Booking notes for Mecklenburg
Enter your flight number so your driver waits at the HAM meeting point at the right time. Choose a minivan if you bring bikes or lots of luggage for a lake holiday, and book child seats in advance. The price covers the whole vehicle and you see the total before you book. Further along the coast, see Rostock and Warnemünde; on the way, Lübeck and Travemünde; and for all routes beyond Hamburg, long-distance transfers from HAM.
