About HAM to Cruise Center Altona
Cruise Center Altona opened in 2011 on the Elbe waterfront in Hamburg-Altona, next to the Dockland building and the ferry pier. It handles ships up to around 300 metres and lies a short walk from the Altona fish market.
A terminal on the river, not in the port
Unlike Steinwerder, the Altona terminal stands on the city side of the Elbe, on Van-der-Smissen-Straße at the western end of the harbour front. It opened in 2011 and takes ships up to around 300 metres, so you will mostly find mid-sized and smaller vessels here. Calls listed for late 2026 include AIDA, Costa, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, nicko cruises and Hurtigruten. Your cruise documents name the terminal for your sailing.
Right next door rises the Dockland office building with its public stairway to a viewing deck, and fish restaurants line Große Elbstraße. If you have time to spare before check-in, this is one of the nicer places in Hamburg to wait.
The route: across the city or round by the A7
The distance from Fuhlsbüttel is roughly 14 to 20 kilometres. Your driver has two options:
- Through the city – south-west via Eppendorf and Eimsbüttel into central Altona, then down the slope from the Geest ridge to Große Elbstraße. Shorter, but with many traffic lights.
- Via the A7 – onto the motorway near Schnelsen or Stellingen, exit Othmarschen, then down towards Neumühlen and along the river. Useful outside rush hour, though roadworks for the A7 noise cover can slow this section.
Expect 25 to 45 minutes, and up to an hour on weekday afternoons when Ring 2 and the approach roads to Altona fill up.
Sunday morning: the fish market factor
Altona's famous Fischmarkt takes place every Sunday morning less than a kilometre east of the terminal. Große Elbstraße is the main street along the water, and early on Sundays it is full of market visitors, parked cars and people walking home from a long night. If your ship sails on a Sunday, tell your driver your check-in slot; arriving from the west via Neumühlen usually avoids the worst of the market traffic.
What to tell your driver
- Terminal name – write Cruise Center Altona, not just "cruise port Hamburg", as there are three.
- Number of cases – cruise luggage decides the vehicle more than the number of people.
- Child seats – book them with the transfer; details on transfers with a child seat.
- Your mobile number – so the driver can reach you at the airport and at the terminal.
At HAM, you meet your driver at the point stated in your confirmation. The page on the HAM meeting point shows how it works.
Where the car stops and where the cases go
The driver brings you as close to the terminal entrance as the set-up on the day allows. On busy call days, staff direct vehicles to the drop-off area. Large cases go to the luggage acceptance with the cruise line's tags already attached; hand luggage stays with you through security. The terminal is only open around ship calls, so arriving far ahead of your slot means waiting outside.

Staying in Altona before or after the cruise
Altona and Ottensen are worth a night, with cafés, the Elbe beach at Övelgönne and short walks to the terminal. Our page on transfers from HAM to Altona and Ottensen covers the neighbourhood, and the overview of hotels in St. Pauli, Altona and Schanze helps you pick a base. For disembarkation day and group bookings, see the guide to all three cruise terminals.
