About HAM to Bremen
Bremen is a Hanseatic city on the Weser whose Town Hall and Roland statue on the Marktplatz are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with Bremerhaven it forms Germany's smallest federal state.
Hamburg Airport to Bremen: the route in three parts
The first part is the way from Fuhlsbüttel to the A1. That means crossing the city to the Elbbrücken or taking the A7 through the Elbtunnel and joining the A1 at the Horster Dreieck or the Maschener Kreuz; either way, this urban section takes 25 to 40 minutes. The second part is the A1 itself, about 100 km past Sittensen and the Bremer Kreuz. The third is the final stretch into the city. All in all, Bremen's centre is about 120 to 130 km from HAM, usually 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes.
Where in Bremen? Drop-off points that matter
- Old town and Marktplatz – the square with the Town Hall and the Roland statue is pedestrianised; hotels around it are reached from the surrounding streets, often via Domsheide or the Wall ring.
- Schlachte and Weser promenade – riverside hotels and restaurants; stopping space along Martinistraße is limited at rush hour.
- Hauptbahnhof and Bürgerweide – the area behind the station is home to the exhibition halls and the big event arena; on event days the access roads fill up.
- Überseestadt – the converted port district west of the centre with offices, hotels and lofts.
- Weserstadion – on the Osterdeich east of the centre; match days close roads around the stadium.
Hamburg Airport to Bremen Airport
Bremen Airport lies in the south of the city, just a few kilometres from the centre and well connected to the A1 via the A281. The ride from HAM takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. Guests book this route when a flight to Hamburg was diverted, when a connection leaves from Bremen, or when an airline offers a route only from there. Enter both flight numbers, add your airline, and leave a buffer of at least an hour on top of the airline's check-in deadline.
From Bremen Airport the tram line 6 runs into the city, so if your meeting is in the centre, the airport is not a detour.
When it gets tight between Hamburg and Bremen
The A1 is one of Germany's main freight routes, linking the ports of Hamburg and Bremen with the Ruhr area. Trucks dominate the right lane, and roadworks are common. The Elbe crossing in Hamburg is the biggest uncertainty: a closure of the Elbtunnel pushes traffic onto the Elbbrücken, and both back up quickly on weekday mornings and afternoons. In Bremen the Bremer Kreuz, where the A1 meets the A27, is the second bottleneck. Allow 30 minutes extra on Friday afternoons and around holiday starts.
Events that fill Bremen
The Freimarkt, Bremen's big funfair, runs every year in October on the Bürgerweide behind the station; for those two weeks the area is crowded in the evenings. Football home games at the Weserstadion and big concerts at the arena also change traffic. If your arrival coincides with one of these, give your driver the exact address and allow extra time.
