About Hotels in St. Pauli, Altona & Schanze
St. Pauli is Hamburg's nightlife and harbour district, with the Reeperbahn, the Landungsbrücken and the Schanzenviertel. Altona to the west was once a separate city; today it combines the Elbe shore, old merchants' houses and lively neighbourhoods such as Ottensen.
Harbour edge and Reeperbahn
- Hotel Hafen Hamburg – Seewartenstraße, on the slope above the Landungsbrücken; the car drives up to the entrance, which saves carrying bags uphill.
- Empire Riverside Hotel – Bernhard-Nocht-Straße, between the harbour and the Reeperbahn; forecourt at the entrance.
- Hotel Imperial Hamburg – Millerntorplatz, at the eastern end of the Reeperbahn; stop by the hotel on the service lane.
- ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg – at the Millerntor end of the Reeperbahn; kerbside stop, avoid late Friday and Saturday evenings if you can.
- City Hotel Monopol – Reeperbahn; at night the pavement is crowded, so the driver stops briefly and you step straight in.
- east Hotel Hamburg – Simon-von-Utrecht-Straße, a block north of the Reeperbahn; calmer street, easier to unload.
- Hotel St. Annen – Annenstraße, a quiet residential street in St. Pauli; relaxed drop-off.
- Prize by Radisson Hamburg St. Pauli – Holstenstraße, at the western end of the Reeperbahn by the Nobistor; stop at the hotel front.
- NH Collection Hamburg City – Feldstraße, opposite the Heiligengeistfeld; stop at the hotel front.
For the area itself see our pages on the Reeperbahn and the Landungsbrücken.
Schanze and Schanzenpark
- Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg – in the historic water tower in the Schanzenpark, address Sternschanze; the access road leads through the park up to the tower, so you are dropped at the door.
- Mercure Hotel Hamburg Mitte – Schröderstiftstraße, at the edge of the Schanzenpark near the TV tower; stop in front of the hotel.
- Superbude Hamburg St. Pauli – Juliusstraße in the Schanzenviertel; narrow, busy street with bars and bikes, so expect a short stop.
Altona, the Elbe shore and Bahrenfeld
- GINN Hotel Hamburg Elbspeicher – Große Elbstraße, right on the Elbe; stop at the entrance on the riverside road.
- Clipper Boardinghouse Hamburg-Holzhafen – Carsten-Rehder-Straße by the Holzhafen, one street back from the Elbe; kerbside stop, convenient for longer stays.
- Egon Hotel Hamburg City – Königstraße in Altona-Altstadt, between St. Pauli and Altona station; stop at the hotel front.
- NH Hamburg Altona – western Stresemannstraße towards Bahrenfeld; a main road with heavy traffic, the driver pulls into the kerb at the hotel.
- Boston Hotel Hamburg – Missundestraße in Altona-Nord; quiet side street.
- Moxy Hamburg Altona – Kühnehöfe in Bahrenfeld, west of Altona station; stop at the hotel entrance.
- Leonardo Hotel Hamburg Altona – Beerenweg in Bahrenfeld, near Ottensen; stop at the entrance.
- Gastwerk Hotel Hamburg – Beim Alten Gaswerk in Bahrenfeld, in a former gasworks; space in front of the building.
- Motel One Hamburg-Altona – Kieler Straße, north of Altona towards Stellingen; on a busy arterial road, stop at the hotel front.
More about the district is on our Altona and Ottensen page.
From Fuhlsbüttel to the west of the city
St. Pauli is about 12 to 15 km from the airport, Altona 14 to 17 km. Off-peak expect 30 to 40 minutes, in the rush hour 45 to 60. The usual line runs south-west through Eppendorf and Eimsbüttel into the Schanze and on to St. Pauli. For Bahrenfeld and Kieler Straße the driver often stays further west via Lokstedt. Your driver picks you up at the HAM meeting point from your confirmation.
When St. Pauli and Altona get slow
- Weekend nights – Friday and Saturday from about 9 pm the Reeperbahn and side streets fill with people; arriving earlier is easier.
- Hamburger DOM – the funfair on the Heiligengeistfeld runs three times a year, in spring, summer and winter; Feldstraße and the roads around it are then very busy. See our DOM page.
- Match days – FC St. Pauli plays at the Millerntor stadium next to the Heiligengeistfeld; for Gastwerk, matches and concerts at the Volkspark matter more.
- Sunday morning – the Altona fish market brings crowds to the Große Elbstraße in the early hours.
- Weekday rush – Stresemannstraße is one of the city's slowest roads between 7 and 9:30 am and 4 and 7 pm.
Luggage on the hillside and in the old quarters
Altona and St. Pauli sit on a steep bank above the Elbe. Footpaths between the river and the upper streets are often stairs, so let the car take you to the right level instead of walking. In the Schanze and on the Kiez the pavements are narrow, and late in the evening it is easier to have a bag with essentials on your lap and get out quickly.
Cruise passengers staying a night before sailing from Altona can book a short second transfer to the Cruise Center Altona, which lies on the same riverside road as the Elbspeicher.

Back to HAM from the west
Allow 30 to 45 minutes to the airport, up to an hour in the afternoon rush. Book with the hotel as pickup address. If your hotel is right on the Reeperbahn, agree on a pickup point at the side entrance or in a side street at night; your driver will tell you the exact waiting point. On Sunday mornings, avoid the Große Elbstraße and ask for a pickup on the upper road if your hotel allows it.
