About To theatres, opera & concert halls
Hamburg's classical stages cluster around the inner city: the State Opera and the Laeiszhalle in the Neustadt, the Thalia Theater near the Binnenalster and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in St. Georg. Kampnagel in Winterhude is the city's large venue for contemporary dance, theatre and performance.
Five stages and where your driver stops
- Hamburg State Opera (Staatsoper) – Dammtorstraße, between Gänsemarkt and Stephansplatz. Opera and the Hamburg Ballett. Cars stop on Dammtorstraße or round the corner in Große Theaterstraße.
- Laeiszhalle – Johannes-Brahms-Platz in the Neustadt. The historic concert hall has a large and a small hall; drop-off is on the square in front of the main portal.
- Deutsches Schauspielhaus – Kirchenallee in St. Georg, opposite the east side of the main station. Your driver usually stops in a side street because Kirchenallee is full of buses.
- Thalia Theater – Alstertor, at Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz behind Mönckebergstraße. The second stage, Thalia Gaußstraße, is in Altona.
- Kampnagel – Jarrestraße in Winterhude, a former crane factory with several halls and parking on site.
An evening at the opera: timing on Dammtorstraße
From HAM the route runs south through Alsterdorf and along Rothenbaumchaussee or the Alster to Dammtor, normally 20 to 35 minutes. Around 6 pm the Stephansplatz junction and the Gänsemarkt slow down, so allow more time for a 7 pm start. The opera has a cloakroom for coats but no space for suitcases. If you land on the day, ask your driver to stop at your hotel first; many guests stay in the Neustadt, a short walk away.
Laeiszhalle or Elbphilharmonie? Read the ticket twice
Many symphony and chamber concerts in Hamburg are sold under the Elbphilharmonie brand but take place in the Laeiszhalle. The ticket names the hall: Großer Saal or Kleiner Saal of the Laeiszhalle, or one of the halls in the Elbphilharmonie in the HafenCity. The two buildings are around ten minutes apart by car in light traffic, and the HafenCity approach behaves very differently at rush hour. Give the driver the hall exactly as printed.
Schauspielhaus: arriving next to the main station
The Schauspielhaus faces the busiest corner of St. Georg. Kirchenallee carries city buses, coaches and station traffic all evening, and stopping there is only briefly possible. Drivers prefer a side street toward Lange Reihe. From the airport it takes 20 to 35 minutes, via the Alster or Barmbek. If you continue by train after the show, the Hauptbahnhof is across the road.
Thalia Theater: between Binnenalster and shopping streets
Alstertor is a narrow street and the area around Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz is partly pedestrianised. Your driver will stop on Ballindamm or at the edge of the square, a two to three minute walk. Check whether your ticket says Alstertor or Gaußstraße: the Altona stage is 20 minutes further west. Near the Jungfernstieg, December Christmas markets and summer events can close some access roads.

Kampnagel: the shortest ride of the five
Kampnagel is about 15 to 25 minutes from the airport via Hebebrandstraße and Jarrestraße. The site is large and the halls are numbered, so look at your ticket for the hall and use the main gate on Jarrestraße as the meeting point. In August Kampnagel hosts its international summer festival, when evenings get busy around the gate and parking fills early. Winterhude hotels and flats are close by; see Eppendorf and Winterhude.
