About HAM to Bremerhaven
Bremerhaven lies at the mouth of the Weser and belongs to the state of Bremen. Its Columbus Cruise Center on the Columbuskaje is one of Germany's main cruise terminals, and the Havenwelten museums sit along the waterfront.
Is HAM the right airport for Bremerhaven?
Bremen Airport is closer, but Hamburg has far more international flights and long-haul connections. Many guests with a cruise from Bremerhaven, or a business appointment in the ports, land at HAM and accept the longer drive. If you only need to reach Bremen itself, the page HAM to Bremen covers that route.
Two hours on the motorway: how the route runs
The distance is roughly 170 to 190 kilometres. From Fuhlsbüttel your driver heads south either through the Elbtunnel on the A7 or over the Norderelbe bridges on the A1, then follows the A1 west towards Bremen. At the Bremer Kreuz the route turns north onto the A27, which runs almost straight to Bremerhaven. From the motorway, signs lead to the cruise terminal.
Plan about two hours without traffic and two and a half hours or more at peak times. The bottlenecks are well known: the Elbtunnel, the A1 south of Hamburg with its frequent roadworks and the Bremer Kreuz on Friday afternoons. Your driver picks the crossing of the Elbe according to the live traffic situation.
Columbus Cruise Center: arriving at the quay
Bremerhaven's cruise terminal is the Columbus Cruise Center on the Columbuskaje, on the Weser north of the town centre. The current building dates from 2003, and since 2025 the terminal has been run by a new operator, with modernisation plans for the historic quay buildings. Ships from AIDA and TUI Cruises are regular guests, alongside other lines.
- Drop-off – your driver stops at the terminal forecourt or the area assigned on the day.
- Luggage – cruise lines describe luggage acceptance points on the parking areas in front of the terminal; hand in large cases there with tags attached.
- Timing – land early enough that a two-hour drive plus an hour of delay still fits into your check-in window.
What to plan before booking
A long transfer with cruise luggage needs space. For two couples with four large cases, a minivan is the comfortable choice. Add your flight number, so a late landing shifts the pick-up, and note the terminal name for the drop-off. The total price is shown before you book and covers the whole vehicle, which makes it easy to compare with train tickets for a family. On a long route, a stop at a service area can be arranged with your driver.
At the airport, your driver waits at the meeting point at HAM stated in the confirmation.
Bremerhaven beyond the ship
If you arrive a day early, the Havenwelten along the waterfront bring the main sights together: the Klimahaus, the German Emigration Center and the Zoo am Meer. The Schaufenster Fischereihafen to the south has fish restaurants in old harbour halls. Sail Bremerhaven, the large tall ship festival, takes place only every few years, usually in August, and fills the town completely.

Coming back: Bremerhaven to HAM
For your flight home, count back from departure: about two hours of driving, a buffer for traffic around Hamburg and the time the airport recommends for check-in. On a disembarkation morning, that usually means a flight no earlier than early afternoon. Other long routes from Hamburg Airport, for example to the North Sea coast, are collected on the page long-distance transfers from HAM. Cruises from Hamburg itself are covered in the cruise terminal overview, and port information for Bremerhaven is on the site of bremenports ↗.
