About HAM to Schleswig-Holstein
Schleswig-Holstein lies between the North Sea and the Baltic, with Hamburg at its southern edge. The A7 connects Neumünster, Rendsburg and Flensburg, while the coasts on both sides are dotted with resorts, fjords and harbour towns.
The A7 is the spine of the north
From Fuhlsbüttel your driver reaches the A7 within a few minutes via Niendorf or Schnelsen, without touching the city centre. From there the motorway runs straight up the middle of the state, past Neumünster and Rendsburg to the Danish border north of Flensburg. Most destinations in this region are a matter of leaving the A7 at the right exit. Kiel has its own page: HAM to Kiel.
One structure worth knowing is the Rader Hochbrücke, where the A7 crosses the Kiel Canal near Rendsburg. A replacement bridge is being built next to the old one, and construction phases can slow traffic there.
Hamburg Airport to Neumünster
Neumünster is the shortest of the classic routes: about 60 to 70 km, normally 45 to 60 minutes. Many guests go to the Designer Outlet at the A7 junction Neumünster-Süd, others to the Holstenhallen exhibition and event centre or to companies in the industrial areas around the town. For the outlet, the drop-off is in front of the main entrance by the car parks. If you combine shopping with your arrival, check the luggage space: purchases add up quickly.
Hamburg Airport to Eckernförde
The Baltic resort on the Eckernförde Bay lies around 110 km from HAM, usually 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Your driver leaves the A7 near Rendsburg and continues on the B203, or goes via the Kiel motorway and the B76 along the coast. In summer, give your exact address: holiday flats along the beach promenade and the harbour have narrow access streets, and the town centre has pedestrian zones.
Hamburg Airport to Flensburg
Flensburg, at the end of its fjord and close to Denmark, is about 160 km from HAM and normally 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. The A7 takes you almost the whole way, the last kilometres run into town past the university area towards the harbour. Hotels along the fjord and the old merchants' courtyards in the town centre are reached from the harbour roads. For Glücksburg or the Danish side, enter the full address: border controls on the A7 at Ellund can cause waiting time.
More of Schleswig-Holstein in one ride
- Bad Segeberg – about 45 to 60 minutes via the A7 and the A21; busy on summer performance days of the Karl May Festival at the Kalkberg.
- Rendsburg and Schleswig – 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes; Schleswig on the Schlei is close to the Viking site of Haithabu.
- Lübeck and the Bay of Lübeck – east on the A1, see Lübeck and Travemünde and the Baltic Sea resorts.
- Husum, St. Peter-Ording and Büsum – west on the A23, see the North Sea coast.

What to tell your driver before a ride north
Add the exact address and, for holiday homes, the house name or key box location to the comments. Many farmhouses and holiday parks have one entrance for cars and another for guests. Tell the driver if you need to stop at a supermarket on the way; on Sundays most shops in the countryside are closed. And enter your flight number so the pickup adjusts to your landing time. The price covers the whole vehicle and you see the total before you book.
On Friday afternoons and at the start of Scandinavian or German summer holidays the A7 north of Hamburg is often slow towards the Bordesholm triangle. On those days allow an extra 30 to 45 minutes.
