About To the musical theatres

Hamburg's musical scene is built around a handful of large theatres, most of them run by Stage Entertainment, plus the privately run stages on the Spielbudenplatz. The Lion King has played at Theater im Hafen since 2001, while other theatres switch productions every few years.

Which theatre is printed on your ticket?

Shows in Hamburg come and go every few years, the buildings stay. Give your driver the theatre, not the show title. The overview below is a snapshot of the schedule in autumn 2026; check the current programme on your ticket or the theatre's website before you book.

  • Stage Theater im Hafen – Steinwerder, on the south bank of the Norderelbe. Disney's The Lion King has played here since 2001 and is still on the schedule.
  • Stage Theater an der Elbe – right next door in Steinwerder. Currently MJ The Musical.
  • Stage Theater Neue Flora – Stresemannstraße at the corner of Alsenstraße, near S-Bahn Holstenstraße. Disney's Tarzan closes in autumn 2026; The Devil Wears Prada is announced as the next production.
  • Stage Operettenhaus – Spielbudenplatz, St. Pauli. Currently Back to the Future, with Tina – The Tina Turner Musical announced as the follow-up.
  • Theater am Großmarkt – Banksstraße, Hammerbrook. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is scheduled to open here in late autumn 2026.
  • Schmidts Tivoli – Spielbudenplatz, a few doors from the Operettenhaus. Home of the St. Pauli musical Heiße Ecke and its Christmas edition.

Across the Elbe: shuttle boat or straight to the door?

The two Steinwerder theatres have no bridge from the city centre. Most guests cross on the theatre shuttle boat from the Landungsbrücken, which is part of the experience. Your driver can drop you at the piers, usually 25 to 40 minutes from HAM, and you walk down to the pontoon.

If you travel with luggage, a wheelchair or small children, ask for the road route instead. It runs over the Elbbrücken and through Veddel into the port and ends at the theatre forecourt. Plan 30 to 45 minutes, more on weekday evenings when the Elbbrücken back up. Enter the theatre name as the destination so the driver does not head for the piers by mistake.

Neue Flora: where the car can stop

Stresemannstraße is a busy through road with bus lanes, so stopping right in front of the glass foyer is not always possible. Drivers usually turn into Alsenstraße and let you out by the side of the building. From the airport the route runs through Eppendorf and Eimsbüttel or along Ring 2, roughly 25 to 40 minutes. Shortly before curtain time the junction at Holstenstraße fills up, so aim to arrive 45 minutes before the show.

Operettenhaus and Schmidts Tivoli on the Spielbudenplatz

Both theatres face the square on the Reeperbahn. The Operettenhaus sits at the eastern end near Millerntorplatz, Schmidts Tivoli a little further west. On Friday and Saturday evenings traffic on the Reeperbahn moves at walking pace and the square itself hosts markets and stages, so your driver may stop at Millerntorplatz or in a side street and leave you a two minute walk.

Three times a year the Hamburger Dom fair fills the Heiligengeistfeld next door. On those weeks allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes for the last kilometre.

Theater am Großmarkt: close to the Deichtorplatz bottleneck

The theatre stands in Hammerbrook between the wholesale market and the railway tracks, south of the Deichtorhallen. The approach leads over the Deichtorplatz or along Amsinckstraße, two of the city's most reliable afternoon jams. Off peak the run from HAM takes 25 to 35 minutes, between 4 and 7 pm it can be 50. The forecourt on Banksstraße has room for cars and minibuses, which helps with groups.

Show day plan for a musical weekend

  • Land by mid afternoon for an evening show, so there is time to drop bags at the hotel first.
  • Add your flight number when booking; your driver tracks delays and meets you at the meeting point in your confirmation.
  • Groups of up to 7 fit a minivan, up to 12 a minibus; the total price for the vehicle is shown before you book.
  • Combining a show with a concert? See the overview of live music venues.

See all FAQs →
Which theatre is The Lion King in?

Disney's The Lion King plays at Stage Theater im Hafen in Steinwerder. Your driver can take you to the shuttle boat at the Landungsbrücken or by road to the theatre itself.

Can the driver take me directly to Theater an der Elbe?

Yes. The road route runs over the Elbbrücken into the port and ends at the theatre forecourt. Enter the theatre name, not the Landungsbrücken, as destination.

The show on my ticket is not listed here. What now?

Productions change regularly. Use the theatre name and address printed on your ticket; the drop-off advice for each building stays the same.

Where does the car stop at the Neue Flora?

Usually in Alsenstraße beside the building, because Stresemannstraße has bus lanes and heavy traffic. It is a short walk to the entrance.

Can I book a transfer for a musical group trip?

Yes. Minivans take up to 7 passengers and minibuses up to 12. Enter the group size and luggage, and you see the total price before booking.

Where will I meet my driver at Hamburg Airport?

Your booking confirmation gives the agreed meeting point. Driver details follow after assignment, and the app can show the driver’s position shortly before pickup. A personal greeting with a name sign can depend on the booked service and meeting point. Follow your specific instructions rather than assuming one terminal exit.
