About Hotels in HafenCity & Speicherstadt
The Speicherstadt is the world's largest historic warehouse district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Kontorhaus quarter. Next to it, HafenCity has grown on former port land, with the Elbphilharmonie at its western tip and the Überseequartier at its centre.
Where the hotels are
- The Westin Hamburg – inside the Elbphilharmonie on Platz der Deutschen Einheit; the car stops on the square in front of the building, where the hotel entrance is signposted.
- AMERON Hamburg Hotel Speicherstadt – Am Sandtorkai, in a historic warehouse; stop on Am Sandtorkai outside the door.
- Sir Nikolai Hotel (also listed as The Nikolai Hamburg) – Katharinenstraße on the Nikolaifleet, between the old town and the Speicherstadt; narrow street, short stop.
- Adina Apartment Hotel Hamburg Speicherstadt – Willy-Brandt-Straße near St. Catherine's Church; the driver stops at the side access, not in the traffic lanes.
- Premier Inn Hamburg City Zentrum – Willy-Brandt-Straße on the former Spiegel site; same approach as the Adina.
- 25hours Hotel HafenCity – Überseeallee in the Überseequartier; stop at the kerb on Überseeallee.
- 25hours Hotel Altes Hafenamt – Osakaallee, in the historic harbour office; quieter street, easy drop-off.
- PIERDREI Hotel HafenCity – Am Sandtorkai, facing the Speicherstadt across the canal; kerbside stop on the HafenCity side.
- Holiday Inn Hamburg HafenCity – Überseeallee, a few steps from the 25hours; stop at the entrance on Überseeallee.
- JUFA Hotel Hamburg HafenCity – Versmannstraße in eastern HafenCity, by the HafenCity Universität U-Bahn stop; popular with families and groups, a minivan or minibus can pull up at the door.
Two approaches: Deichtorplatz or the Ost-West-Straße
From the airport it is 11 to 14 km, usually 30 to 40 minutes, and 45 to 60 in the rush hour. For eastern HafenCity (Überseequartier, Osakaallee, Versmannstraße) the driver typically comes via the Hauptbahnhof and the Deichtorplatz, then crosses the Oberbaumbrücke. For the Speicherstadt and the Elbphilharmonie the faster line is often along the Willy-Brandt-Straße and down onto the Kehrwieder peninsula.
HafenCity is built on raised plinths to protect it from storm floods, so streets run one level above the promenades by the water. Cars stop at street level; the waterfront paths are for walking. If your hotel describes its location "on the promenade", the entrance for arrivals is still on the street side.
Bridges, cobbles and pedestrians in the Speicherstadt
The Speicherstadt bridges are narrow, partly single lane and paved with cobblestones. Tour groups cross them all day, and around the Miniatur Wunderland on the Kehrwieder queues reach onto the pavement. Your driver chooses the bridge closest to your hotel and stops where unloading does not block the lane.
Wheeling suitcases over cobbles is tiring, so let the car take you as close as possible rather than walking the last stretch. More on the district is on our Speicherstadt page.
Cruise days and concert nights
Since September 2025 the new cruise terminal in the Überseequartier handles ship calls right in the middle of HafenCity. On turnaround days coaches and cars queue on Überseeallee and the surrounding streets, mostly in the morning. Our page on the Cruise Center HafenCity explains the terminal itself.
At the Elbphilharmonie the busy windows are before concerts, roughly 6:30 to 8 pm, and when the audience leaves, often after 10 pm. If you arrive at the Westin then, allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes for the last stretch. Details on the concert hall are on the Elbphilharmonie page.
Practical checklist for HafenCity arrivals
- Exact address – HafenCity is still growing, and some streets are new to navigation systems.
- Flight number – so your driver follows the real landing time at the HAM meeting point.
- Group size – minivan for up to seven, minibus for up to twelve; hotels like JUFA and the 25hours houses see many groups.
- Cruise passengers – if you stay one night before boarding, book a second transfer from hotel to terminal; it is often only a few minutes.

Leaving HafenCity for the airport
Plan 30 to 45 minutes back to HAM, up to an hour on weekday afternoons, when the Deichtorplatz and the roads around the station slow down. Book with your hotel as pickup address and agree with reception where the car should wait; for the Westin that is the square in front of the Elbphilharmonie.
Very early flights are easy: before 6 am the run to Fuhlsbüttel often takes under 25 minutes. The total price for the vehicle is visible before you book, and it does not change if the traffic is heavy.
