About Hamburg city centre
Hamburg's city centre combines the Altstadt around the Rathaus with the Neustadt and the Binnenalster. The Kontorhaus district with the Chilehaus and the neighbouring Speicherstadt are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
“City centre” is not an address
Hamburg's centre spreads across the Altstadt and the Neustadt, from the Hauptbahnhof to the Michel and from the Binnenalster down to the Speicherstadt. Type the full street address of your hotel, office or flat into the booking form. A destination such as "Rathaus" may put the pin on a square where cars cannot stop.
The Jungfernstieg has been largely closed to private cars since 2020; apart from bicycles, it is reserved for public buses, sightseeing coaches, delivery traffic at set times and a few other exceptions. Your driver will therefore usually stop at the Ballindamm or on the Neuer Jungfernstieg, a short walk from the water.
The route in from Fuhlsbüttel
From the terminals the car joins the Alsterkrugchaussee and heads south. Depending on traffic, the driver continues east of the Außenalster through Winterhude and along An der Alster, or west through Eppendorf and Harvestehude. Both routes end at the Wallring that circles the old town.
Outside rush hour the drive takes about 20 to 30 minutes. In the morning and afternoon peaks, 35 to 45 minutes are realistic.
When it gets tight
- Weekday mornings – roughly 7 to 9.30 am, especially at the Ring 2 crossings in Alsterdorf and Winterhude.
- Late afternoon – from about 4 to 6.30 pm along the Lombardsbrücke and Glockengießerwall.
- Deichtorplatz and Willy-Brandt-Straße – the east-west axis south of the old town is slow almost all day.
- Saturdays – shopping traffic around the Mönckebergstraße and the car parks.
- December – the Christmas markets on the Rathausmarkt and elsewhere draw crowds and closures.
Where the car stops near the main sights
- Rathaus – the square itself is pedestrian; stops are in the surrounding streets, a few minutes on foot.
- Binnenalster and Alsterarkaden – Ballindamm or Neuer Jungfernstieg.
- Gänsemarkt – from the Dammtorstraße side.
- Kontorhaus district and Chilehaus – between Burchardplatz and Meßberg, close to the Speicherstadt.
- Mönckebergstraße – mainly for buses; drop-off usually works from a side street.
S1 or private transfer?
The S1 runs from under the terminals to Jungfernstieg and the Hauptbahnhof in about 25 minutes. That is hard to beat with hand luggage. With heavy bags, children or a hotel away from the stations, a transfer saves the stairs and the last kilometre on foot. Our train to Hamburg guide compares both in detail.
From an office in the old town back to HAM
Many business trips end in the Kontorhaus district, around the Rathaus or on the Ballindamm. For the return, enter the company address and the name of the building, and agree that you will wait in the lobby until the driver messages you. On Friday afternoons the whole city seems to head north at once, so allow around 45 minutes for the drive to Fuhlsbüttel and keep the usual time for check-in and security on top. Leaving before 3 pm usually spares you the worst of it.

Staying in the centre
Many visitors choose a hotel within walking distance of the Rathaus and the Alster. Our page on hotels on the Alster and Jungfernstieg lists houses with notes on their driveways and nearest stopping points.
