If you arrive in Hamburg by long-distance or regional train and need to continue to the airport, the connection is pleasantly simple. The S1 suburban railway runs directly from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, the central station, to Hamburg Airport. There is no need to take a separate airport shuttle bus. According to Hamburg Airport and Deutsche Bahn, the rail journey takes about 25 minutes and trains run frequently during the day. Even so, it is worth understanding the route before you travel. With luggage, a flight to catch and perhaps a short connection time, knowing where to go and what to expect can remove a great deal of unnecessary stress.
Direct to the airport on the S1
At Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, follow the signs for the S-Bahn and look for the S1 towards “Hamburg Airport (Flughafen)”. The train runs to the airport without a change. At the airport, the station is directly connected with the terminal area, and Terminals 1 and 2 can be reached by lift, escalator or stairs. If you have large suitcases, a pushchair or reduced mobility, allow extra time for the walk from your mainline platform to the S-Bahn. Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is a busy and fairly large station, and the internal transfer can take several minutes depending on where your arriving train stops.
A standard single ticket for the Hamburg AB fare area costs €4.10 in 2026. The hvv currently gives a discount on many digital single and day tickets. If you are arriving on a Deutsche Bahn long-distance ticket, check the destination printed or shown on your booking. If your ticket is issued all the way to “Hamburg Airport”, the local S-Bahn section may already be included. If the ticket ends at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, you will normally need a suitable local ticket for the final part of the journey.
The important detail at Ohlsdorf
The one feature of the route that first-time visitors should know about is the train split at Ohlsdorf. There, the S1 divides into two sections. The front part continues to Hamburg Airport, while the rear part travels towards Poppenbüttel. In practice this is clearly indicated by platform displays and announcements, but it is still easier to board the correct section at Hauptbahnhof from the beginning. If you have several bags, you do not want to move through the train shortly before the split.
Check the electronic destination displays on the platform and in the train. If you are uncertain, ask station staff or another passenger before departure. Once you are in the correct section, no further change is required and the airport stop is clearly announced.
How much time should you allow?
The rail journey itself is about 25 minutes, but that should not be the only number used for planning a flight connection. You also need time to leave your long-distance train, find the S-Bahn platform, wait for the next S1 and walk from the airport station to your airline's check-in area or the security checkpoint. On top of that, a buffer is sensible in case your incoming train is delayed or there is a short-notice change to local services.
If you have a flight to catch, do not build an itinerary that depends on a single perfect connection. The S1 itself is fast and frequent, but a late long-distance train can reduce the time you thought you had available.
When a taxi or private transfer can make more sense
A taxi from Hauptbahnhof to Hamburg Airport provides a direct road journey without platforms or the train split. It can be attractive if you have very heavy luggage, limited mobility, several young children or you arrive at a time when convenience is more important than price. The drawback is that road travel is more sensitive to traffic. Outside busy periods the journey may be smooth, while rush-hour congestion, roadworks or major events can extend it.
For a taxi taken from a rank in Hamburg, the official city tariff applies. Since February 2025 the base fare has been €4.50, with kilometre charges and waiting time added according to the tariff. Hamburg also allows certain regulated flat fares on request. A pre-booked private airport transfer is another option if you already know that you want a driver waiting. Depending on the provider, you can reserve a larger vehicle for a group or extra luggage and agree the pickup arrangements in advance.
A transfer can be particularly practical when several people arrive together by train. The group stays together and does not need to navigate the station with bags. The main point to clarify is what happens if the incoming train is delayed. A reliable operator should state how long the driver waits, how delays should be reported and whether waiting time is included in the quoted price.
A useful tip for tight connections
If your connection at Hauptbahnhof is short, buy any required local ticket digitally before arriving and check the S1 departure information in advance. This avoids searching for a ticket machine when you are carrying luggage. Do not, however, rely on an old screenshot of the timetable. Platforms and service patterns can change, so live travel information on the day is more useful than a saved plan from several days earlier.

Taxis and private transfers are mainly comfort alternatives.
